Background |
 |
A True Tobacconist
The Melendi tobacco lineage goes way
back into the 1900s.Ronald Melendi 's
great grandfather was a cigar maker
and his grandfather was a tobacco grower
in Havana, Cuba. His father was the
first of the Melendis to get into the
retail side of the tobacco business,
opening De La Concha in 1964.
Since the early nineties, De La Concha
has experienced tremendous growth and
has doubled in size as the industry
went through the cigar boom.
Located on 6th Avenue in mid-town Manhattan,
this retail tobacco store has been mentioned
in different magazines - Cigar Aficionado,
Fortune -and over the years has won
accolades and awards from manufacturers
like Dunhill and Davidoff among others.
According to Ronald Melendi, Senior
Vice President, the success of the business
lies in customer service and the variation
of products: "A customer is not
just treated as somebody who is spending
money; he is going to get an education,
he is going to get recommendations.
We are going to provide the best sales
-service that the customer demands from
a fine establishment such as ours."
Celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger,
Danny Devito, David Letterman and Rudy
Giuliani shop and smoke at the store.
De La Concha works on Everest.

The
Challenge |
 |
The Melendis have been importing from all
over the world and keeping stock of about
1000 products ranging from cigars, humidors,
pipe tobacco to smoking accessories. Running
short of a fast moving product, or being over-stocked
leads to loss of time and money, so keeping
track of inventory is critical in their business.
"We were using Peachtree and we
got to the point where it just wasn't doing
everything we wanted it to do. I started looking
for different POS accounting systems and did
a search on the Internet -Everest was at the
top of the list."
Melindi observed that there were very few
products that offered integrated solutions
or a speedy POS system.
Prior to going live with Everest®,
information was always in pieces. It was difficult
to put it all together. "Peachtree, our
previous software, didn't have an integrated
website or a POS system, and it made information-gathering
next to impossible for us."
Before making his purchase, Ron compared Everest
with other accounting software. "The
reason we chose Everest is the real-time,
integrated shopping cart system. Additionally,
Everest doesn't require our website to be
hosted externally, saving us from costly monthly
fees." |
 |
 |
The
Solution |
 |
De La Concha has been an Everest ERP Software customer since 2001,first purchasing
Accware and, with growing business needs,
migrating to a ten-user Everest license.
From an inventory management stand-point Everest
allows better control because at any given
time Ron 's staff knows exactly what they
have in stock. They know exactly what they
need to reorder. "If an item is not moving,
we 're going to know about it and we 're not
going to order in the quantities that we did
in the past. And if the item is a hot item
that is blown off the shelves constantly,
we make sure that we have adequate supply."
The inventory function is used across both
the warehouse and the store. Merchandise that
is received is entered into Everest -the easiest
way to keep track of stock by brand, across
locations.
Real-time integration in Everest E-Commerce
is the biggest advantage. "It is effortless
to enter a new product into the system and
to write out the description or upload a picture
and just click "web-enable" and
everything just shows up there, which is a
tremendous benefit to De La Concha." |

 |
 |
The
Result |
 |
 |
Revenues have tripled for online orders
since using Everest. |
 |
With Everest, De La Concha can collate
all information - data from the website,
the store, the office |
| |
and the POS, in real-time. De La Concha
is now able to make more intelligent
business decisions based on real-time
data. |
 |
The staff is familiarized with the
system and happy using Everest. According
to Ron, the process of |
| |
reconciling bank accounts has tremendously
cut down-time, by at least a couple
of hours a day. |
 |
The POS system provides product information
on what they need to order, what sells,
as well as |
| |
what doesn't sell. |
 |
The accounting department
enjoys using the easy and quick accounting
functions of Everest. Ron's |
| |
manager thrives on the
Promotional Pricing feature for running
specials. Ron has also discovered other
features that benefit his business. |
|
| |
| Everest offers everything that
they need. Ron adds, "Though there are
some features that we don't use right now,
like kits and the metric system, Everest runs
our whole business. It has already started
to save us money." |
